Collet: Espanyol can fight for Europe

Espanyol President Joan Collet insists the club can fight for the European places this term despite the recent dip in form.

Javier Aguirre’s team were unbeaten in the first five La Liga games of the season but have since suffered three successive defeats. However, Collet [pictured, left] remains confident Los Periquitos are capable of contesting a top six spot.

“If we have to talk about Europe then we will because we must fight to be higher in the table than we have been in recent seasons. With a bit of luck we’ll have sporting success this year.

“I’m hopeful of putting this club where it deserves. I can be wrong with some decisions, like everyone else, but Espanyol should be back where we were not so many years ago – in Europe,” he told reporters.

Collet, accompanied by marketing director Toni Alegre, flew to Mexico on Sunday night in a bid to attract further investment into the club, which is already sponsored by the state of Cancun.
