Torres to miss Spain qualifiers

Fernando Torres looks to be unavailable for Spain’s closing fixtures of World Cup qualification, after sustaining a knee injury.

The Chelsea striker picked up the injury during his club side’s Champions League win away to Steaua Bucharest and is set for a scan today to confirm the extent of damage done to the joint.

Manager Jose Mourinho commented after the game on the suspicion that at the very least, Torres will miss the next 15 days, ruling him out of Spain’s upcoming games with Belarus and Georgia to close out 2014 World Cup qualification.

“The doctor is very confident it is not a big injury like we had with Marco van Ginkel [out for the season], but it’s something with his knee, his ligaments, and we have to wait for the scans [Wednesday],” Mourinho told reporters yesterday evening.

“If the injury is for 15 days I think he’ll be fine. The problem is if it’s more time.”
