‘Madrid crazy in the market’

Jens Lehmann has criticised Real Madrid’s transfer activity this summer for warping prices out of perspective.

The retired goalkeeper saw former side Arsenal pick up Mesut Ozil from the Spanish capital club in a €45m deal, just as they completed terms on a €90m-€100m deal for Gareth Bale.

“The Ozil deal was much better. I do not see a €50m difference between the two,” first considered Lehmann in conversation with Spox.

“These are market mechanisms, set because a club like Real Madrid goes crazy in one move.

“Ozil is too expensive, but that’s because Bale went for a lot of money to Madrid. Nobody is worth that.

“Ozil’s impact? People in Asia will say ‘wow, Arsenal have paid €50m for a player’. It immediately generates more shirt salves, marketing and revenue.”
