Banega: Weekend a disaster

Ever Banega has called on his Valencia teammates to step up and turn around the team’s difficult start to the season.

Los Che have begun their League campaign with three defeats from four played, falling in Week 4 to a 3-1 reverse at Real Betis.

For the dressing room’s third captain, it is time for things to change.

“It is a difficult time for us. To start the League in this way is not normal,” Banega has told reporters this week.

“We are the first that want to reverse the situation. The other day we went wrong in everything. There was a lack of attitude and self-esteem. It was a disaster.

“We conceded three goals very quickly. But we have to continue.

“We have the game on Thursday [in the Europa League with Swansea] and we have to start winning in order to gain confidence.”

Banega was asked if the team’s fourth Coach in just over a year, Miroslav Djukic, was to blame.

“The Coach has nothing to do with it. It is us who are on the pitch. He works very well. At Espanyol we were beaten by two set-pieces and against Betis for two lost balls.

“We are Valencia and this cannot happen. We carry three defeats from four games. We are to the death with our Coach and do what he tells us.

“It was an error to not read the Betis game well and to have lost so many balls. The solution is to keep working and improving on everything, with the ball, on the wings…everyone knows their role.

“During training we do it, but then things are not going the same in games.”
