Villa, Tiago skip Atleti training

David Villa and Tiago Mendes were the notable absentees from Atletico Madrid’s first training session this week with a bigger squad.

Atleti, who have begun the season with three wins from three, today welcomed back to training some of those who had featured with their national squads over the past fortnight.

Whilst this included Spain’s senior and Under-21 representatives Koke Resurreccion, Mario Suarez, Javier Manquillo and Oliver Torres, striker David Villa notably missed the workout.

Alongside midfielder Tiago, the striker worked in the gym on Wednesday morning, struggling with muscle discomfort.

However, it is believed in principle that both Villa and Tiago will be fit and available for selection by Saturday afternoon, when Almeria visit the Vicente Calderon.

Meanwhile, Arda Turan, Josuha Guilavogui, Cristian Rodriguez and Jose Maria Gimenez are all yet to report in from international duty.
