‘Like I was never injured’

Sevilla winger Piotr Trochowski has enthused at his return to the field after 11 months on the sidelines recovering from knee surgery.

The Polish-born German international damaged cartilage in his right knee last October playing against Barcelona and ended up having to undergo two separate operations.

With a recovery period that has stretched into a year, the 29-year-old made a return to action this week in a friendly with Cordoba.

“Before taking to the field it was a special moment, but I tried not to think too much about it because I was playing,” Trochowski reflected this week.

“I played like I had never been injured. Additionally, the team will benefit now from having one more player.

“I felt really good. I had almost 60 minutes. The knee is fine, if a little tired, but it did not get inflamed. That’s very important to me.

“In turning I had no issue and I did not play with fear. I knew the injury was very serious and ultimately I would determine my recovery. If people do not think you are coming back, in the end you just believe it yourself.

“The last two months have passed very quickly and I’m also surprised myself for being able to play without problems.”

Trochowski’s recovery could have him in line to feature in Sevilla’ next match, which is ironically against Barcelona.

“One of my goals was to get back for this game because I got injured against Barcelona and then could return against them a year later. It would be a good story, I’m excited to make that game.

“This was a very serious injury, but I could be a starter in the team in just a month. I hope to be back better than before.

“I have no pressure, I just want to play and now I can do more. My best years as a player are still to come, I’m very excited to play this game. When I had the injury it was the biggest moment.”
