Zidane defends Bale fee

Real Madrid assistant boss Zinedine Zidane has defended the fee paid by the Spanish giants for Gareth Bale.

The Welsh international has joined Los Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee the club’s in-house television channel reports at €91m, yet Zidane told Canal Plus he is not surprised at the size of it.

“It’s the market that dictates the price,” the Frenchman declared.

“Admittedly, in the present climate it grabs people’s attention and is a gamble, but in sport you need to be bold and go for it.

“It is [President] Florentino Perez who decides how far we go in economic terms, but of course I was consulted about making this signing, I and the technical staff, who are always present when we sign great players.”
