Deco confirms retirement

Former Barcelona playmaker Deco has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

The Brazilian born Portuguese international spent four years on the books at Barca, making over 100 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals.

After five trophies picked up with the Blaugrana including two League titles and the 2006 European Cp, the former Porto man moved on to Chelsea in 2008.

With two years in London and a further three back in his home country with Fluminense, Deco has today confirmed his intention to walk away from the game, after 17 years.

“With great sadness and regret I report the end of my career as a professional athlete,” the player confirmed in a statement.

“The final minutes on Wednesday with Fluminense were the last of my 17 years on the field as a football player.

“I would have loved to have continued to the end of the Brazilian season and help the team back into the Libertadores. As much as I wanted to help Fluminense, my body would not let me.

“Physically I could play, but my muscles would not support me. I’m very grateful for all the confidence and support.”
