Nacho ‘proud’ to captain Betis

Real Betis left-back Nacho has declared his pride at being chosen as new club captain by his teammates.

“I’m proud that the squad have chosen me as Betis captain and it is a great responsibility,” the Malaga-born player told the club’s official website on Thursday morning.

“This is not just any other football club. It is a genuine feeling for many thousands of people and to wear the armband means a lot to me.

“Captains are in the front line and we must lead by example, to set the bar high for any future captains so they feel the weight of responsibility and what this means.”

Nacho will be accompanied in his duties by striker Jorge Molina, midfielder Salva Sevilla and defender Antonio Amaya, as is customary in Spain, and all of them expressed similar sentiments.

“I am proud to represent Betis and it is a privilege as well as a great responsibility. I hope I meet expectations,” said Molina, while Sevilla explained that he had “already taken the armband in a pre-season game, but it’s not every day you get to captain a club like Betis”.

For his part, fourth captain Amaya also showed his satisfaction with the role.

“It’s true I’m happy to form part of this group of captains. I will try to do the job well alongside my colleagues,” he maintained.
