Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin believes that his side are currently the best in the Spanish capital.
The Rojiblancos defeated Real Madrid last season in the Copa del Rey final, and the Uruguay international has claimed that Los Blancos are living in his team’s shadow.
“Right now, it’s Real Madrid who are in our shadow,” he told reporters.
“We have won five trophies during the past few years and that is difficult to achieve.
“Atletico won the Europa League twice – as a tournament, it may not be at the same level as the Champions League but it gave the players and the club prestige to win it.
“Atleti fans appreciate it when the team wins silverware, in the end, that’s what really matters.
“It’s difficult [to compete with richer clubs] but we are a team – that’s what defines Atleti.
“We play as a unit and we are tough, competitive and make life difficult for our rivals. We use what weapons we have available to us to battle against other teams but in the Spanish League, it’s difficult to stay consistent.
“And we have to play the Champions League and the Copa del Rey… sometimes, the season seems endless.”
