‘Atleti strong enough for 2013-14’

Enrique Cerezo says that Atletico Madrid may still act in the transfer market, but that if they don’t, the squad is strong enough for the coming season.

Los Colchoneros have brought in David Villa, Martin Demichelis and renewed Thibaut Courtois’ loan for a third year but are largely seen as still looking for a defensive midfielder.

However, the club President believes that even if no-one else arrives, Diego Simeone will have a strong team next season.

“We have a great team, if there is anything that we are missing we will try to get it,” Cerezo reflected to reporters this week.

“But even if nothing happens it does not matter as we have a very good team and can play with what we have.”

The President was speaking in Lima, as he accompanies the team on a tour of South America, where they have so far been well received.

“It is true that the victory in the Copa del Rey against Real Madrid has had a huge significance, it has been important. In football, anything can happen.

“In recent years, the European trophies and winning the Cup has had a great impact. It is rare to find someone who does not know of this success or who Atletico Madrid are.

“We have also had figures of South American football through our teams and it has not gone unnoticed here.

“We are in a period of adaptation and what is important is for us to get into a position for the games against Sevilla and in the Supercopa de Espana.”

The team’s most notable signing of the summer so far has been David Villa from Barcelona.

“Normally when a player arrives there are a portion of fans in favour and some against. With Villa this has not happened, because everyone has spoken well of him.

“I have heard no-one speak ill of his signing. Villa’s signing has been accepted 100 per cent by the club’s fans.”
