Garde: Madrid a good test

Remi Garde is looking forward to seeing how his Lyon side face up against Real Madrid, “a team that, on paper, is better than ours.”

The French host Madrid tomorrow evening at the Stade de Gerland for the Spaniards’ second game of this preseason, on from Sunday’s trip out to Bournemouth.

For their Coach, the game will prove a worthy test.

“They have just changed their coaching staff and are in the preparation phase whilst looking to get into shape, but Real Madrid remains Real Madrid,” Garde warned reporters ahead of the game.

“They are a team that have individuals of quality that are superior to many.

“It is important to have a good match to get an idea of how we will be in our upcoming European games.

“Playing against Madrid will serve for the [Champions League third qualifying round] match with Grasshopper.

“I am happy to face a team that, on paper, is better than ours. I hope to see a lot of intensity from us for 90 minutes, without losing concentration.

“It will be a good test for our defence, and we will face problems when we do not have the ball and it will be very interesting to see how we react to Real Madrid.”

The former defender considered Madrid’s new management team, which includes Carlo Ancelotti as Coach and Zinedine Zidane as one of his assistants.

“Carlo Ancelotti has already proven that he is able to win at the clubs that he has coached. If he is at Madrid then it is because they want to work together.

“I spoke with Zidane about his desire to be closer to the pitch, when he was at Lyon as part of his training, so I am not surprised to see him in this position.”
