Tello: I will fight to play

Cristian Tello has outlined his determination to continue fighting for playing time at Barcelona, as he describes contract renewal talks as ‘on the right track’.

The winger will face added competition for places this coming season from Brazilian star Neymar, but he is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract at the club.

With this new deal believed to be increasing his basic buyout clause amount, the winger has today outlined his commitment to staying and fighting for his chance to play.

“Every year it is more important for me and every year I hope for more prominence,” reflected Tello to reporters today.

“With constant training and work, hopefully I can achieve this, although I am aware that in my position I am up against the best in the world.

“Neymar and everyone in my position. This team has the best players in my position. The competition is fierce.

“My contract renewal? My agent is in conversation with the club. I know that they are on the right track and we shall see.

“I did not want to consider any offers to leave. My choice and ambition is to stay here as long as I can and to succeed here.”

Thiago Alcantara completed a move this week to Bayern Munich, believed in part for his lack of playing time at the Camp Nou.

“Bayern have made a great signing. I respect his decision and congratulate him and wish him luck.”

It was against Bayern in last season’s Champions League semi-final that there were calls for Tito Vilanova to play Tello from the start.

“Every decision made by the Coach must be respected. My dream is to compete for a starting spot.

“I have more experience, I feel ready. Every day I feel more prepared. I am aware that the competition is tough, but I like the challenge and raise myself for it.”

Barca face Bayern in preseason later this month, which has added spice with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola’s seemingly worsening relationship with Vilanova.

“The squad hasn’t really noticed what has happened between Tito and Guardiola. Everyone has their opinion and that’s it.

“The match against Bayern will be more than just a preseason test and it will serve us well for our preparations for the year ahead, it will be very hard.”
