‘Schuster and Pellegrini are alike’

Sergio Sanchez believes there are many similarities between new Malaga boss Bernd Schuster and former Coach Manuel Pellegrini.

The Costa del Sol outfit are in Germany preparing for the new season and, after a few days training under Schuster, former Espanyol and Sevilla defender Sanchez [pictured, left] assessed the merits of the two tacticians.

“There are few differences. Both are well-rounded characters with a lot of football experience who can put over to players, very quietly, what it is they want.

“Above all, the way we treat the ball is given maximum priority, and that makes the players very happy.

“There are also many similarities in the way their sides play, but each has their own particular style and you can see that through how their teams obey their instructions.”

The 27-year-old acknowledged that Los Blanquiazules’ project is very different to last season, with a number of top players having since left, yet he feels the objectives remain the same.

“The team’s priorities have not changed because we still aim to finish as high in the table as possible.

“Some of our key players have left, yet our ultimate ambition is to try and repeat the exploits of the last couple of seasons.

“It’s going to be tough but not impossible. Our hopes are still the same.”

Sanchez also revealed that he hopes to play in his favourite centre-back position after being forced to operate at right-back last term for one reason or another.
