Diego Costa granted citizenship

Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa has today been granted dual-nationality and has become a Spanish citizen.

Having spent over five years in the country, the 24-year-old Brazilian has on Friday morning been given a Spanish passport.

It means that the capital club can now sign a non-EU player this summer.

Clubs in Primera Division can only have three squad members from outside the European Union. Brazilian Joao Miranda, Uruguay’s Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Costa were those three players.

But with the forward being granted citizenship, Diego Simeone’s men can now fill that extra space during the transfer window.
