Iniesta saves local side

Andres Iniesta has stepped in with a €240,000 investment to save his local club from administrative relegation this summer.

A shareholder at local side Albacete Balompie, the Barcelona and Spain midfielder is reported by the club’s general manager Matias Martinez and President Agustin Lazaro as having accounted for the six-figure sum that the club owed to players in unpaid wages.

Unable to pay the amount themselves, Albacete were otherwise facing the prospect of administrative relegation to the fourth tier of Spanish football ahead of a deadline today.

Iniesta, who was a former youth player at Albacete up until 1996, has previously sponsored the club and bought shares in it, with his father Jose Antonio appointed on the board of directors.
