FIFA: Confederations to continue

FIFA have moved to quickly dismiss that the Confederations Cup could be postponed on safety grounds.

Reports in Brazil have it that at least one nation taking part in this summer’s tournament have requested to their football association to push for its suspension on safety grounds.

However, FIFA have offered brief comment on the situation, which is the result of continued protests in the country over the government’s funding of several international competitions in a short space of time.

“Up until this point in time, neither FIFA or the local organising committee have ever discussed any such possibility [of abandoning the tournament],” PA Sport quote a FIFA official as determining today.

The BBC also quote a FIFA spokesperson on the reports: “Neither FIFA nor the local organising committee have ever discussed the possibility of cancelling the tournament.

“There are currently no plans to discuss it. These reports are pure speculation.”
