Modric: I’m not leaving Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric maintains he has no desire to leave the club in the wake of reported interest from Chelsea.

The Sun claims new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had made the Croatian international one of his prime targets as he bids to overhaul his squad before the start of next season.

However, Modric has offered the former Madrid boss no encouragement and says he is determined to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu and fight for his place.

“I’m not even thinking about the possibility I could leave Madrid this summer, but there is interest from other clubs. Every kid who plays football dreams about playing for Real Madrid. It was the same with me.

“Of course I was sad when Jose Mourinho left. He was the one who insisted in bringing me to Madrid. He is a fantastic Coach and I am honoured to have worked with him,” said the 27-year-old.

Mourinho paid in the region of €33m to lure Modric from Tottenham Hotspur last August but will have to build his new team without him, although the player wishes him every success in his new venture.

“He really impressed me. It’s such a pleasure to play in his team and talk with him about football.

“I wish him all the best at Chelsea. I believe he will use all his knowledge and expertise at Stamford Bridge once again,” said Modric.
