Djukic to hold Albelda talks

New Valencia boss Miroslav Djukic’s first job will be to hold talks with David Albelda over his proposed retirement from football.

The 35-year-old defensive midfielder has been with Los Che since 1996 and was contemplating hanging up his boots at the end of last season. Now, however, Djukic wants to hear if the Spanish international might be willing to carry on before the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

It is reported Albelda feels that physically he is able to continue but has previously said he does not ‘want to be a burden to anyone and that I want to contribute if they still want me’.

Albelda played in six of Valencia’s last seven La Liga games under former Coach Ernesto Valverde. However, his advisors believe it is touch-and-go whether Valencia are ready to actually offer him a new contract.

In that case, the player will consider whether or not to try his options abroad as he enters the twilight of his career.
