Courtois picks up Zamora Trophy

Atletico Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois has won the Zamora Trophy for the best goals-against ratio in La Liga this season and at 21 he is the youngest ever.

The young Belgian, who individually also set new club records this term for the longest runs respectively home and away not conceding for Atleti, has become the first goalkeeper for the Vicente Calderon outfit to win the Zamora Trophy since Jose Francisco Molina in 1995-96.

The award is handed out each season to the goalkeeper to have conceded the fewest goals over the course of at least 28 ‘calculable’ games.

Courtois’ 29 conceded from 37 appearances is the best ratio this season in Spain, at 0.78 goals against per game and it ends Victor Valdes’ four-year reign.

The 21-year-old is Atleti’s sixth different goalkeeper to pick up the award and is officially the youngest goalkeeper to have done so, beating Sporting’s Juan Carlos Ablanedo to that honour.
