Rosell hopes for Abidal’s return

Sandro Rosell says Barcelona hope for Eric Abidal’s return to Barcelona one day, whilst Andoni Zubizarreta explains why he is leaving.

The Frenchman was confirmed at a Press conference on Thursday as leaving the Camp Nou after six year, despite having wanted to remain in a playing capacity.

However, the club reportedly pushed for a non-playing role, one that they have today indicated will remain as an open offer to the 33-year-old once he retires.

“He has shown the importance of life. That determination can overcome anything,” reflected club President Rosell in bidding farewell in front of reporters today.

“We have been given a life lesson that we will never forget. He has experienced glorious moments here. But the relationship that unites us is beyond football.

“I announce that we are not saying goodbye, but ‘see you in the future’. We will say that until he decides.

“When he wants to, the doors at Barca will be open for him to head our football schools worldwide.

“The position requires knowledge of football and Eric knows a lot. For his education and humility, he has the ideal profile.

“I know that when he returns we will think of the ways in which he can help us, and he will.

“For me as President this is not an easy day, or for any of us.”

Rosell was asked about the evaluation of why Abidal could not play on at the club, to which he delegated answering to Zubizarreta.

“It is difficult to say no. Saying yes is always easier. The process was not a one-day meeting. We did not talk about his illness.

“Throughout this process we have spoken about the individual, the medical part, the footballing part, the contractual side… We are taking steps based on that.

“There was a complete consensus on this decision. From everyone. These are decisions of the club.”
