Monreal: Pellegrini the best

Nacho Monreal has praised his former Malaga Coach Manuel Pellegrini, calling him ‘the best Coach I have ever worked under’.

Monreal spent 18 months at La Rosaleda under Pellegrini’s tutelage before a January 2013 switch to Premier League side Arsenal.

“He's the best Coach I've worked under, the one who taught me the most,” Monreal told Marca today, in reference to his former tactician who is increasingly linked with the vacancy at Manchester City.

“He knows everything there is to know. It's a shame that the project is falling apart. I hope [Malaga owner] Sheikh [Abdullah] Al-Thani reconsiders, because the people there deserve better.”

The full-back also has words of praise for his current manager.

“Arsene Wenger is Arsenal's linchpin. Everything goes through him. He's a motivator. He gave me confidence by putting me in the team as soon as I arrived.”

Based now in North London, Monreal was asked for his view on Real Madrid target Gareth Bale, who is on Tottenham Hotspur’s books at the moment.

“Bale has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo. He's tall, strong and strikes the ball really well. He was named player of the season this year and he's the reason Tottenham was in the running for the Champions League until right to the end.

“The Spanish media have linked him with Real Madrid or Barcelona, but I don't see it. Spurs will do everything they can to keep him.”
