Andoni Zubizarreta has conceded that it was his mistake to believe that Barcelona could renew Victor Valdes’ contract.
Earlier this season, the goalkeeper informed the club of his intention to leave at the end of his June 2014 deal.
For the Catalans’ sporting director, responsibility for how the situation played out stops with him.
“Valdes is a great ‘keeper, a player who does not lose value. If he wants to leave, we’ll sit down with him and look for the best option,” commented Zubizarreta on RAC1 today.
“I thought the renewal talks were going well, and so it was my mistake.
“When we made the proposal for the renewal, they said they did not want to renew, for a desire to leave, to go and compete and try another style of football.
“This is a goalkeeper who gives his all and I believe that his decision is more about life than his profession.
“I have a clear idea of the profile of the goalkeeper for next year. His style, philosophy and the chances that we have. Exactly like Valdes, no.”
Eric Abidal is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated at not knowing his future at the club beyond this June.
“With Abidal we have already spoken. We’ve told him what we think. With him we have to be open and transparent to explain our position.
“I believe that Abidal will still be a part of Barca 10 years from now. He shall be the example to us.”
