Mathieu happy at Valencia

Amid links to Barcelona, Jeremy Mathieu has reflected that he is happy at Valencia, where he remains in talks over a new contract.

The Frenchman was this week paired with a possible move to the Camp Nou, having impressed at Mestalla in a recent switch from left-back to centre-back.

However, despite delays in renewing his current contract that expires in June 2014 and has a buyout clause of €8m, the player has asserted that he wants to stay at Valencia.

“Barcelona is Barcelona and it is normal that if I was asked about then that I would say that they are a fantastic team,” the 29-year-old told Onda Cero this week.

“But my focus is clear: Valencia.”

Meanwhile, Superdeporte report that current negotiations hinge on the length of deal on the table.

Where sporting director Braulio Vazquez has put forward a two-year extension to 2016, the player and his agent are apparently pushing for a contract through to June 2017.

Braulio is reportedly seen as open to including clauses in his original offer to make the automatic option of that third year Mathieu wants attainable.

The sporting director reportedly has Coach Ernesto Valverde’s agreement on the matter, with the duo seeing the Frenchman’s career as possible extended if he continues at centre-back.
