‘Levante will fight for truth’

Levante President Francisco Catalan has promised that the club will ‘fight to the death’ to protect its image in the wake of alleged match fixing.

The Valencian outfit has been listed in reports this week as facing a possible investigation by authorities for the suspicion of players fixing their 4-0 home defeat to Deportivo in Week 31 this season.

Following on from reading a prepared statement, Catalan made clear his determination to resolve the issue through cooperation.

“We will fight to the death to know the truth and we will put everything at our disposal to do so, for our fans and for our more than 100 years of history,” the President told a Press conference today.

“It may be that something has happened or that nothing has happened. We are not going to investigate this internally.

“We are not policemen or detectives. We are a board of directors, we are a football club, while of course all this is doing great harm to the institution because it is not just the players, it is the club.

“We will do everything possible so that its image is not damaged.”

The reports this week followed on from Javier Barkero’s fall-out with teammates over allegations he made against them during that Depor defeat.

“Since the Depor game I have had more than 10 meetings with many players. It has not been just since yesterday.

“Since then I have met with Barkero, Juanfran, Ballesteros, several times to try as far as possible to normalise a difficult situation.

“We wanted to resolve it internally and what I have said to them is between us.”
