‘First minutes vital for Madrid’

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Bodo Illgner believes that the first 15 minutes will be key to his former side’s hopes of overcoming Borussia Dortmund.

Madrid must turn around a 4-1 deficit on Tuesday evening in their Champions League semi-final second leg.

“It will be difficult but nothing is impossible,” this week reflected Illgner to Marca. The former German international won the trophy in 1998 and 2000 with Los Blancos.

“Tactics won't play a huge part in the outcome of the tie but the first 15 minutes will be extremely important.

“Madrid must attack from the first minute and play with intent. If they score in the first few minutes then I think they can do it.

“If they manage to attack from the off, the fans will respond and it will be a great atmosphere, something which has played a huge role in some special Bernabeu moments in the past.

“This game will be different [to the 1998 semi-final Illgner played in between the sides], they have to score three goals to progress. They have to give everything from the first minute.

“It’s a great opportunity to do something historic. I did not have the opportunity of facing such a comeback of this magnitude and it must be very nice.”
