Costa appeal success ‘a scandal’

Atletico Madrid’s successful appeal against Diego Costa’s booking picked up against Sevilla has been called ‘a scandal’ by Hedwiges Maduro.

The Brazilian was booked for a coming together with Geoffrey Kondogbia during a game that he was criticised afterwards for his behaviour in, which included accusations of simulation and feigning a head injury after a clash with Cala.

That his booking has since been rescinded by the Competition Committee has left Sevilla's Maduro aghast.

“This is a scandal, because it was a clear yellow card,” the midfielder told reporters this week.

“He was lucky not to be sent off, with his theatrics, because that is usually a booking each time.

“The Competition Committee must be self-critical.

“Costa? He is a great player but we do not need the many things that surround him that are nothing to do with football.”

Maduro was speaking ahead of Sevilla’s weekend trip to Real Valladolid and the outside chance the team still hold of making Europe.

“We are aware that we can still change the picture of this season. There are six games remaining and we can still do something.

“That is the team’s mentality. We want to be in Europe without the help of Malaga, we have to think like that.”
