‘We know how good we can be’

Mats Hummels has reflected on Borussia Dortmund’s self-confidence going into their Champions League tie with Real Madrid.

Dortmund welcome Los Blancos to the Signal Iduna Park this Wednesday evening for the first leg of their semi-final, with their influential centre-back in buoyant mood.

“We know how good we can be and what teams can expect from us if we play to our potential and the crowd gets really loud,” enthused Hummels to his club’s official website this week.

“But we also know from the second game how good they are, when they upped the pressure and caused us some real problems, both with and without the ball.

“We know how difficult it will be to come out winners from these two games. But we also know that everything is possible for our team.

“And we know that we need a good result to have a realistic chance."

“What’s a good result? Both a win and a clean sheet. Because then every goal we score in Madrid would work to our advantage.

“We need to get a good result if we don´t want to find ourselves under pressure from the start in the second leg.

“Madrid are a lot more than Cristiano Ronaldo and have a top player in every position. But that partly applies to us as well.

“It will be crucial that we attack and defend as a whole team. If all 11 players have the same idea we are very difficult to beat.”
