Beckham: Messi one of a kind

David Beckham has assessed Lionel Messi’s talent as unmatched, and admits that he changed the midweek clash between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Beckham faced up to Messi in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final clash between Barca and PSG, which finished in the Catalans’ favour 3-3 on away goals.

“He’s one of a kind, there cannot be another like him. Both he and Cristiano Ronaldo, who similarly does not reach the same level, are above everyone else,” reflected the Englishman to Telam this week.

“They may have similarities in technique and talent and it is amazing for football to have them both at this time, but Messi is the best player in the world, simply.

“It is a great moment for Messi, he is a special player and person.

“We [PSG] were winning [the Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou this week] before he came on and then when he did, he helped create their goal.”

Beckham is back in European football this year with PSG, after five years on the books at LA Galaxy.

“I really enjoyed being in this kind of match, to keep playing at my age. It is a spectacular experience, although I do not like losing.

“We played very well in the two games and we did something we can be proud of, we did not lose to Barcelona and this is something that can boost us ahead of next season.”
