Figo: Raul deserves an event

Luis Figo has reflected that friend and former Real Madrid teammate Raul Gonzalez deserves an event from Real Madrid and Spain to say thanks.

Raul left Los Blancos in 2010 after 16 years in the first team, during which time he set a number of scoring and appearance records and won 16 major trophies.

“As a person who has given so much to Madrid and Spanish football, he deserves some event to say thanks, not only from Madrid but also the national team,” Figo told Cadena COPE today.

“He would be delighted and would gladly welcome it.”

Figo also reflected on recent links suggesting that Jose Mourinho would be leaving Madrid this summer in favour of a return to Inter, where Figo worked alongside him.

“It is impossible to happen now. When you leave with a good memory there is always the hope of a return, but it is not always the case that the second time around is as good as the first.

“If Mourinho is leaving Madrid then it is because he wants to go. As a madridsta I hope that he does not leave Madrid.”

The former winger was also quizzed for his viewpoint on the issue surrounding Iker Casillas’ place in the Madrid starting line-up.

“He stopped playing because he was injured and now he has competition at this time from Diego Lopez, who has done very well in his absence.

“Now he will have to win his place back again, as his Coach believes and so do I. Iker is very young, he can play for another 10 years at a high level.”
