‘We knew we had to play well’

Gonzalo Higuain was left delighted with his goal and Real Madrid’s performance in defeating Galatasaray 3-0.

The Argentine’s header in the second half capped a comfortable first leg Champions League quarter-final win over the Turks.

“It was an important match. It was the first leg and we knew we had to play well to get a result at home to take with us to a difficult ground to play at,” reflected Higuain afterwards.

“It is a good result that allows us to go there with a little bit of calm but knowing that the second leg will be difficult.

“They are a great team but Real Madrid went out there on top from the first minute and got a 3-0 win which gives us confidence.”

“I have never played in Istanbul, but they say that it is a stadium where they put a lot of pressure on you but we have a lot of quality players that have played in many stadiums and I do not think it will affect us.”

A less than consistent season from Higuain and strike-partner Karim Benzema was put to one side, with both netting in the win.

“We are relaxed. The Coach has already said that he has never pressured us to score goals. Today we scored and the important thing is that the team won.

“I got to come on for 20 minutes to help the team and I was lucky enough to get that goal. It's great to score and have everyone celebrate it.

“My celebration with Pepe? When I went out to warm up he said that I would score and so I went to celebrate with him.

“Pepe has been a great friend of mine for many years and has always helped me. I dedicated it to him because I told him that if I scored it would be for him.”
