Atleti play with Diego options

Atletico Madrid are reportedly continuing to work out with Diego Ribas a way to match his current wages in an attempt to sign him.

The capital club are strongly linked with making a permanent move for the Brazilian playmaker, who spent the 2011-12 campaign on loan at the Vicente Calderon.

However, a stumbling block has been the 28-year-old’s wages, set currently at Wolfsburg as €5m a year.

Atleti are understood to be working out a deal in place to come as close as they can to that salary, through bonuses and clauses.

The club are also seen as able to pay more, if they only offer a two-year contract to Diego, with an option for a third year dependent upon a number of conditions such as Champions League qualification met.

Diego’s current contract in Germany expires in June 2014 and he is seen as highly likely to be sold by Wolfsburg this summer.
