Vela: Real can pay more for me

Carlos Vela has revealed that Real Sociedad can cancel out Arsenal’s buyback clause this summer by paying an unspecified fee themselves.

The Mexican is increasingly being linked with a return to Arsenal this coming summer, just a year on from being sold to La Real for €3m.

Vela’s form has reportedly attracted the Gunners to the proposition of buying him back at an agreed clause of €4.2m this summer either to reintegrate him into their plans, or to cash in on him and make a quick profit.

The striker faced the Press this week, once more faced questions on the subject and decided to put some of the onus on club President Jokin Aperribay.

“Aperribay can pay more and so remove the problem, whilst I am not preoccupied about being here or elsewhere,” the 24-year-old offered this week.

“Logically I think it is best to cancel the buyback clause, but we have to see what happens, if the President’s pocket stretches a little or not.

“Does European qualification with Real affect my future? No. I’m very happy here and, if we are not in Europe after this year, I would like to stay and get into it for the next one.

“I do not think this is the time to worry about my future. There are more important things, like fighting for Champions League and Europa League qualification.

“Let’s see what we get this season and then we’ll think about the next. We will try in every way to achieve fourth place in the table.”

Vela’s first spell in London with Arsenal saw him struggle for first-team action.

“The Press paid much attention and continue to question me for refusing to return to London, where it seems I did not do very well.

“Clearly, it makes me think about things more coolly, because I have lived there and I know what it is like.

“If the possibility of a return is presented, things would have to change to make me think again.

“I have good memories, because the club and the fans treated me very well,  but they were tough times.

“Arsenal are a great club and gave me the opportunity to come to Europe, so I maintain an affection for them, but right now I am not there and when I was, I did not have the opportunities that I might have had.”

Vela then turned his attention to Real’s upcoming fixture against compatriot Javier Aguirre’s Espanyol.

“Yes I know him very well and I know we will come up against a difficult team because he is a great Coach and has his team doing very well, as evidenced by the success they have had recently.

“What is special about him? The motivation that he gives the team. Training and matches are very intense and he transmits that to the players.

“He gives you confidence, yet also asks for the most out of you. He brings your level up and makes the team more competitive.”
