‘Alba injury doesn’t mean I start’

Nacho Monreal has claimed that he is not an automatic starter for Spain, despite Jordi Alba having to pull out of the squad.

The Barcelona full-back pulled his hamstring in the 1-1 draw with Finland on Friday, but the Arsenal man has insisted that he is not guaranteed a place in the team.

“It is an important game for us,” he told reporters. “Jordi's injury obviously opens a door for me, but I do not know who will play.

“I may have an opportunity, but I will have to train at my highest possible level still.”

The former Malaga defender then commented on how crucial a win will be in Paris against France on Tuesday.

“We knew we would have to go to France and win. And now, with the draw [against Finland] it is even more of an obligation.

“It is too early to talk about the end of qualification, but there is no margin for error now. If we lost we would be five points behind France.

“So we have to win. And that depends on us.”
