Karanka: The goals will come

Aitor Karanka has reflected that Real Madrid were fortunate not to be punished by Celta Vigo for failing to take more of the chances they created on Sunday.

Madrid recorded 21 shots in Sunday evening’s League game but only ran out with a close 2-1 win at Balaidos thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s two goals either side of Iago Aspas for the home side.

For assistant Coach Karanka, it is a situation that he admitted could have been worse, but will soon improve anyway.

“They are forwards and they always say, and it is the truth, that there are spells of form,” he commented in the post-match conference.

“It might seem that they are not being accurate enough but the important thing is creating the chances.

“Last year they were going in and this year they are not going in as easily but the important thing is to keep creating the chances and they will start going in and we will win matches more comfortably.

“In the first 20 minutes or half an hour, the whole team struggled to get into the match. They played with a high defensive line and caught us offside a few times and we could find a way passed.

“Then in the last 15 minutes, and for part of the second half, the team controlled the match and we had more chances.

“The problem is that, perhaps, when we could have killed off the match, the goals didn’t come. And they have had the opportunity to equalise.

“Right at the start, they had chances that Diego made some goods saves against. Gradually we created more opportunities and we could have killed off the match and in the end they could have equalised.

“It would have been terrible because had a good enough match to win more comfortably.”

“They have done a great job this year and in previous years with home grown players. I think that they have a lot of quality players, but it is hard to say whether they will be among the three to go down or not. But seeing what they do with the players that they have, Celta are a good team.”
