‘Vazquez changed our mentality’

Paulo Assuncao has reflected that Fernando Vazquez has ‘changed the dressing room’s mentality’ at Deportivo.

Vazquez is the third Coach of the season for the Galician outfit, who sit bottom of the League, nine points adrift of safety.

Despite losing his first two games in charge, away to Sevilla and at home to Real Madrid, Assuncao is optimistic, as the team head into this weekend’s home tie with Rayo Vallecano.

“For me, Vazquez has changed the dressing room’s mentality. Everybody has a cool head, thinking about victory,” explained the former Atletico Madrid man.

“He has come with great strength. His experience has given us security. We are very happy.

“The team is cooler, happier, more relaxed. We’ve lost against Madrid, but with faith and with work we will see if we can get a win next time.

“That game gave us confidence and we have seen that we can get out of this situation. We know the way forward.

“If we continue what we have started against Madrid, we are certainly going to get wins. We must play as well or better against Rayo Vallecano, a game that Deportivo’s chances of survival depend greatly on.

“It will be a difficult game. It would be very bad if we lose, but we have hope. We go into it with the will and desire, we are working well and, if we do a good job, we will certainly play well, as we did against Madrid.

“Rayo are a great team and we must be able to stay focused if we want to beat them.”
