‘Difficult, but Madrid can win’

Alfredo Di Stefano has given his backing to Real Madrid’s current selection of players to progress past Barcelona in the Copa del Rey today.

Los Blancos head into the second leg of their Cup semi-final against their Clasico rivals looking to overturn Barca’s away goal advantage picked up at the Santiago Bernabeu.

For club legend Di Stefano, who currently still holds the record for total goals scored in the Clasico, Madrid face a test, but one he sees them able to pass.

“This is a very difficult game, but I hope that Real Madrid advance through. I dare not give any predications because in football nothing is certain,” the honourary club President told Europa Press this week.

“The desire of the one team is to win, and the desire of the other is the same. We must see what happens. It would be difficult [for Madrid], but I see it as possible.

“There are no key players in the game, everyone will have an important role.

“Is Cristiano better than Messi? That’s going to be something else, but as always, everything will be decided on the pitch. Real Madrid have the players required to do it all.”

Following on from consecutive Clasicos, Madrid then face Manchester United in the second leg of the Champions League Last 16.

“Obviously I think we can progress. Madrid have always played in the Primera Division at a level like that of Manchester United.

“It will be a tough match, but I hope the players will go on to win. We want to win, but first they will have to play.”
