Joaquin: Malaga won’t forget League

Joaquin Sanchez has reflected that Malaga are aiming to continue their League form and not be distracted by the challenges faced in Europe.

The Costa del Sol side fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Porto on Tuesday evening in the first leg of their Champions League Last 16 clash.

“We didn’t see the Malaga we’re used to seeing on the pitch on Tuesday. The rival was very strong, aggressive and maintained a tight defence, which made it difficult for us to keep hold of the ball,” Joaquin began to reporters after training today.

“However, despite the fact they dominated possession, they didn’t create very many opportunities to score, and only got the one goal, which was actually offside.

“We’re all so grateful that the fans accompanied us to Portugal, and their support was invaluable.  It was just a shame we couldn’t come back with a win for them.”

The winger, however, took time to make clear that ambition and priority remains in ensuring League form is maintained. This weekend fourth-placed Malaga travel to Joaquin’s former side Real Betis.

“We can’t undermine the importance of the League as it’s the key to every other competition.  It’s a long road, but we’re performing well in League games.

“Despite Tuesday’s defeat, we’re concentrating on returning to winning ways and playing great football, as we’ve shown in recent matches.

“It’s always nice to go back and play at the Benito Villamarin. Betis have had a great season so far, and will be fighting for the top spots until the end of the year as they’re very competitive and play great football.

“A victory would put us nine points ahead of a direct rival, and although there’s still a long way to go, away wins are always important.

“We’ve had a good run of results in away games and have been performing well.”
