‘2-0 would have been fairer’

Vitor Pereira was left pleased with Porto’s home win over Malaga in the Champions League, but felt his team deserved a second goal.

Joao Moutinho’s side-footed finish nine minutes into the second half ultimately decided the first leg of this Last 16 clash, but Pereira felt his side could have had a second goal.

“We fulfilled our objective of winning this match tonight, and even though we could have scored more goals, I think a 2-0 win would have been a more accurate result,” explained the Portuguese Coach.

“What Malaga did tonight is what they allowed to happen. We stepped up our attack and limited Malaga’s normal game play.

“They defended well however, although their attacking display wasn’t as strong as in other matches.

“They didn’t create many chances to score, but we’re expecting a difficult return leg in Malaga, although we believe we’re capable of qualifying.

“We like to take the initiative and control ball possession. Malaga will try and dominate play in the next match, but we’ll step up our defence and try and impose our style of play.

“Malaga’s strength is in defence. We tried diagonal passes and cross shots, but came up against a very tight defence. The team really knows how to defend well.

“We’re prepared for a very tough return leg, with Malaga wanting to turn things around. We’ll focus on the attack and on individual performances, and fight till the bitter end to win this tie.”
