Worst Depor form for 30 years

Fernando Vazquez began his reign at Deportivo with a defeat, to confirm the club’s worst League form for almost 30 years.

Vazquez was on the bench for his debut as the Galicians’ new Coach on Friday evening, in a 3-1 defeat at Sevilla.

That loss, combined with the previous four suffered under Domingos Paciencia has confirmed the team’s worst run of form in League football since the 1973-74 season in La Segunda. From late 1973 into early 1974 the team lost six on the bounce.

Looking back over the team’s top-flight record, the run of five losses is the worst in La Primera since the 1964-65 season, when they also suffered five defeats in a row.

The only other time the club have otherwise endured such form was in the 1952-53 campaign, when again they lost five on the bounce in La Liga.

It means that should Vazquez’ side lose their next League match, at home to Real Madrid, then they will set a new club record for consecutive defeats in the Spanish Primera Division of six.
