Bielsa clears up Zubizarreta lunch

Marcelo Bielsa has hit out at the Press for making more of a meeting he had with Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta than necessary.

The duo were pictured lunching together earlier this week, with rumours sparked that they were discussing possible transfers for Athletic Bilbao duo Ander Herrera and Iker Muniain.

However, following on from Marca’s explanation that it was arranged simply because the duo were both shooting for a documentary that day, the Argentine tactician has looked to add clarity, and hit out at the Press for not seeing that clarity in the first place.

“The media demand transparency so as to avoid misunderstandings. Nevertheless, the impact generated from this meeting has been the opposite, that is clear,” he lectured reporters today.

“There has been no transparency and no clarity. But, to be more transparent than we were in this meeting, is impossible. No professional issues were dealt with.”

Bielsa was talking in his pre-match conference ahead of Athletic hosting Espanyol this weekend.

“They are in a period of ascention, and since the arrival of Javier Aguirre they have been performing strongly both home and away.

“They are a balanced team between offence and defence, combining youth and experience.

“But, I’m optimistic for my team and confident that the club can perform in the League according to our resources.”
