Malaga confirm Monreal departure

Malaga and Arsenal completed a deal to transfer full-back Nacho Monreal to the London club in time for the close of the January window.

Reports surfaced yesterday that the Gunners had made a late bid for the 26-year-old in reaction to having lost regular left-back Kieran Gibbs to long-term injury.

Previously linked with the former Osasuna man, Arsenal concluded negotiations on deadline day yesterday to bring Monreal to the Emirates stadium on an initial €12m fee, with a further €1m expected  to soon follow in add-ons and clauses.

Monreal, who spent 18 months at La Rosaleda, is the second Spanish international Malaga have sold to Arsenal this season, following the summer move of Santi Cazorla.

“Malaga Club de Futbol would like to thank Nacho Monreal for his strength and dedication during his time with the Blue and Whites in the season and a half he was with the Martiricos outfit,” read Malaga’s statement on their website, confirming the deal.

“The Club wishes him every success with Arsenal Football Club.”
