Jimenez: Zaragoza were soft

Manolo Jimenez criticised his Real Zaragoza players for being too soft and allowing a more competitive Atletico Madrid roll them over.

This Sunday saw Zaragoza become the 10th side from the last 10 to lose at the Estadio Vicente Calderon this League season, much to Jimenez’ frustration.

“We lacked the belief in victory and we lacked soul and competitiveness,” the Coach complained afterwards.

“Atletico Madrid are admirable. Not only do they have great players, but they all work as a team. They all compete at 100 per cent.

“Am I angry with my players? We have to be ambitious because we represent a team that was previously the best in Spain, even if in recent years we have had to avoid the drop on the final day of the season.

“The priority remains survival and we must be a serious team, as we normally are, except not at the Calderon. We were so soft and like this Atletico just passes right over you.

“We did not deserve any more than we got, but the goal from the penalty had an offside just before, but I repeat that this is no excuse.”
