OFFICIAL: Las Palmas appoint Jimenez

Las Palmas have appointed Manolo Jimenez as their new Coach, less than 24 hours after he departed Greek club AEK Athens.

Jimenez guided AEK to their first league title in 24 years but departed at the end of his contract, with the Gran Canarian club’s new secretary Toni Otero appearing confirming an announcement would be made on Saturday with a press conference on Monday.

The 54-year-old former left-back enjoyed three years in charge of boyhood club Sevilla between 2007 and 2010, while he has also coached Real Zaragoza.

He then spent a stint at Qatari club Al-Rayyan SC before returning to Greek giants AEK for a second spell in charge last year.

Former Real Betis and Deportivo Coach Pepe Mel had been strongly linked to the post, but the immediate availability of Jimenez has trumped that move.

Paco Jemez, appointed in December, is set to leave the club after failing to avoid demotion to La Liga 123.
