‘Casillas must have done something’

Valery Karpin has reflected that Iker Casillas must have been dropped from the Real Madrid reason for ‘something’.

The Spain No 1 has been benched for the last two League games by Jose Mourinho, sparking criticism for the Coach and debate in the media.

For Karpin, who spent 11 years of his playing career in La Liga, something must have happened to create the situaton.

“People have talked about it without knowing much of what may have happened in training or in the dressing room,” reflected the former Real Sociedad, Valencia and Celta Vigo player.

“You have to know what has happened and why. No Coach does something that will harm himself or his team.

“Something must have happened. Nobody would just remove him from the team, he has been the best in the world in his position for the last five years. So, I am reluctant to speculate as to why.”

Karpin is back in charge as Coach at Spartak Moscow, after replacing former Valencia boss Unai Emery.

“What went wrong with Unai? A little bit of everything. He himself said that he lacked the team spirit.

“The topic remains the same, the players are more or less happy now. If they are playing on their own then they are not happy… that was missed. So, as he said, he lacked in communication.”
