Assuncao explains Depor choice

Paulo Assuncao has been unveiled to the Press as a new Deportivo player and explained why he chose to return to La Liga.

The former Atletico Madrid man had been at Sao Paulo since leaving the Calderon last summer, but after only six months cancelled his contract by mutual consent to make a quick return to Spain.

“Deportivo are a club that are very well regarded in Brazil. There were players like Mauro Silva and Djalminha who played here and for me it is a pleasure to represent such a great team,” explained the 32-year-old, as his presentation to the media.

For the midfielder, it is a reunion of sorts with Coach Domingos Paciencia. Assuncao was at Porto during the season that Domingos was leading the B team.

“I’m very happy to return to Spain, and for being under the command of Domingos Paciencia. He’s a great Coach, a great person and he always wants to win.

“He was the Coach at Braga when they had their best ever season [second in the Portuguese League in 2009-10]. His team never lost at home to anyone.”

The player, who said he did not ‘think twice’ about the move, confirmed that he will be training from Tuesday and available for selection for the weekend’s trip to Real Sociedad.
