Augusto Cesar Lendoiro has explained why he decided to relieve Coach Jose Luis Oltra of his duties at Deportivo.
The President met with and then sacked the 43-year-old on Sunday, less than 24 hours before the players are due back for post-winter break training.
“Circumstances ruled and he understood that he had arrived at a situation that needed turning around,” Lendoiro told reporters yesterday evening.
“The situation was irreversible. There are no friends when changing Coaches, but we believe that at this time a shock is needed to change the players and that has to come from the hand of a Coach.”
Lendoiro, who later announced Domingos Paciencia is all but signed up as Oltra’s replacement, was taken to task on why it took eight days from Depor’s last game before acting to change Coach.
“It is not a decision I took today [Sunday]. It was taken before the meeting of the shareholders, but I realised that I had to take the decision with the utmost delicacy based on good relations with both men and that at this time of Christmas the decision was significant.”
