Domingos in at Deportivo

Deportivo President Augusto Cesar Lendoiro has confirmed that but for some ‘small details’, Domingos Paciencia will be the team’s new Coach.

Sunday saw the President meet with and then sack Jose Luis Oltra, after a poor run of form before winter had seen the team drop to bottom in the table.

After confirming the news of the departure of both Oltra and his assistant Chema Sanz, Lendoiro then told reporters later the same night that former Braga and Sporting CP Coach Domingos has all but agreed to come in as the replacement.

“We’re talking about a great Coach, who knows Spanish football and has played in Spanish football,” Lendoiro told reporters.

Domingos’ only previous experience of La Liga came during a two-year stint at Tenerife during his playing days as a striker.

Otherwise playing his whole career at Porto, the 43-year-old now arrives at Riazor with coaching experience at a number of Portuguese outfits, most notably including taking Braga to the 2011 Europa League Final.

A statement on Depor’s official website quotes Lendoiro as saying only ‘small details’ are preventing official confirmation of the Portuguese’s arrival, with Domingos set for a contract until the end of the season.

However, it also states that he and his backroom staff will be presented to the Press at 1.30pm local time, after looking in on the players’ first training session back after the winter break.

Domingos is represented by agent Jorge Mendes, who has a number of clients in Depor’s playing squad and is reported as likely to help bring in reinforcements during the winter transfer window.
