Xavi on Abidal, highs and Paul Scholes

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has described the moment he heard Eric Abidal was suffering with cancer as 'the worst of my career'.

The French defender was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011, and the 32-year-old Blaugrana legend has claimed that he will 'never forget' that period.

“The worst moment of my career was when I found out that Abidal had liver cancer,” he told the Daily Mail.

“It was one of those moments where you put everything into perspective. I will never forget the strength he had.”

He also remarked on some of his career highs, as well as revealing who he believes to be the best midfielder in Europe.

“For significance, you cannot compete with the feeling of playing, and winning, the World Cup final.

“But the best match I've played in was when we won 5-0 against Real Madrid [in 2010].

“The sense of absolute superiority was incredible. In the locker room after the game we just started applauding – it was an unforgettable experience.

“I think the best midfielder of the past 20 years is Paul Scholes,” he said finally. “He is a great role model as well.”
