Coentrao injury not serious

Fabio Coentrao remains a doubt for the weekend, but the Portuguese full-back’s injury is not as bad as first feared.

The former Benfica man was forced off midway through the first half of Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday with a suspected torn right hamstring.

However, the severity of the injury has been revealed through tests to be only a light strain, meaning that the player can return to training a lot sooner than originally expected.

Even so, Jose Mourinho will reportedly rest him for the weekend trip to Real Valladolid, to avoid aggravating the strain, in anticipation of his availability then for the following three games before the year is through.

Madrid are already without the squad’s other senior left-back Marcelo for the long term, after he required surgery in October on a fractured metatarsal.

Mourinho will reportedly consider either youth team defender Nacho or regular right-back Alvaro Arbeloa for the left-back berth this Saturday evening.
